Janus, an ancient Roman god associated with beginnings, transitions and endings, is usually depicted as two-faced, looking to the future and the past. The term Janus-faced is sometimes used to describe one who is duplicitous.
John and Beth, his former fiancйe, are mysteriously visited by two people claiming to be their counterparts from a time that slightly lags ours. Their purpose is to get John and Beth to alter their views on marriage which have affected them in their time.
This novella is a farcical prose account of their interactions that reveal things about themselves and each other and alter the course of all of their lives in unexpected ways.
