Kids love sports, and teachers and librarians looking for a way to integrate sports stories into the curriculum will find this book a good starting place. The book is divided by various sports, including one section devoted to soccer, swimming, and track and field. Both fiction and nonfiction titles are included for a variety of age groups. Each synopsis of a book is followed by a list of activities or conversation starters or both that will get children thinking about what they have read. Occasionally, the activities are off the track. For instance, children who read a book about the Chicago Bulls are asked to research the weather of the "Windy City." Research might turn up the fact that Chicago got its nickname from its "windy" politicians and not the breeze off the lake. One of the book's pluses is its introduction of poetry into the reading units. There are lots of terrific poetry books centered on sports, and this is a great way to expose children to them. The introduction advises teachers on how to incorporate the book in various disciplines. Ilene Cooper
