Jerry Paul still harbors some resentment over his forced early retirement from the CIA. He now lives a quiet life with his wife, Kathleen, in North Carolina and concentrates on fishing. But he's often reminded of the unsolved case of the100 kilograms of Plutonium-239 stolen during a joint U.S.-Russian operation to secure nuclear weapons in Kazakhstan. That much plutonium could cause massive life and property loss. When Yuli Karpov, a former Russian nuclear weapons expert, contacts Paul about suspicious activity involving the plutonium, the case is reopened and Paul is hired by the U.S. Counterterrorism Center to help. His pursuit of the nuclear material takes him to Estonia and Finland where the traffickers seem to be a step ahead of him. And after discovering the location of the material, it disappears again. The hunt is complicated by the collusion of the Russian intelligence service and a giant Russian oil conglomerate. Jerry finds that former rogue KGB agents are about to sell the nuclear material to Iranian terrorists. The mission, dubbed Springboard, becomes dangerous and people are being killed. Paul can only hope that he survives the hunt and recovers the plutonium.
