As a pilot and author I have always held a melancholic and morbid fascination with airplane crashes. I think it is the inherent fear of wondering if one might die while flying their airplane. I can recall times when I would be up there in the wild blue flying one of my airplanes. My attention would turn to focus on a single main bolt; one that held my wings on - wondering if it might break and send me tumbling down to a premature death. Every pilot must wonder about such things. I doubt that any pilot climbs into their airplane for a flight thinking this will be the last one; the one that gets them. If a pilot thought that they wouldn’t take off. This is my third book containing 20+ true Spectacular Aircraft Mishaps. All are taken from a collection of airplane incidents that I have studied over the years. Most are tragic and are not for the faint hearted. Each mishap contains at least one element of unusual circumstance - the very reason the incident made it into my collection. What must be the mindset of a pilot and his passengers when they realize that something is horribly wrong; that they may all die shortly? Then there are the mourners; those left behind. The tragedy of it all. Can we learn anything from these crashes? Nearly all of the following accidents were preventable, or were caused by freak circumstances that could never have been calculated or anticipated. A few of the mishaps have been annotated to clarify technical jargon, or to make them more interesting. You will be especially amazed by the mishap where the airplane is buzzing a lake using a flashlight for reference. Then there is the story I titled “VICE, TOOLBOX, STAPLES FOR BALLAST” - you will never guess what happens in that story. By the way, I am including 21 stories this time (see index below) that all end with fatalities, plus a few other bonus stories on top of that. The primary indexed accidents range from the small to the large. Most importantly is the 21st bonus story I have titled; Suicide, Terrorism or Accident? Here you can determine if someone should have made more of this story before 911. The official findings are consistent with suicide in this crash of an airliner off the coast of New York killing all on board. Then of course there are 17 or 18 other mishaps in the book. If you like reading to learn of shocking mishaps that have happened to others you will be very impressed with all of these stories that I gleaned from hundreds if not thousands of case files. Note: Although all these mishaps represent true accounts; each backed by actual National Transportation Safety Board findings of ‘Probable Cause’ - the author asserts for the record that no attempt is being made by him to determine or question the abilities, mindset, skills, personhood, character or judgment of any person living or dead. Wherever real names are used; same is part of the public record and constitutes no effort on the part of the author to disrupt the privacy of any person living or dead.
