Manager Neil Warnock insisted his players were right to celebrate their success, though the threat remains of a Football Association punishment that could see Rangers drop into the play-off places — or worse.

The manager, celebrating a seventh promotion, claimed it was his greatest achievement so far.

Before the game the FA issued a statement to deny that any of its officials had made a comment, reported in a newspaper on Thursday, which suggested that, if found guilty of breaking rules of third-party ownership of midfielder Alejandro Faurlín, the club could be docked 15 points.

It read: “The FA wishes to make clear it disassociates itself from an article in The Sun newspaper. Any alleged FA source is not speaking on behalf of the FA.”

Late goals from Adel Taarabt and Tommy Smith confirmed the victory that takes Rangers up — for now — and the Rangers players danced on the Vicarage Road pitch, some of them holding flags with the words 'Going Up’.

Warnock said: “Without a shadow of a doubt it’s the best job we’ve done, in 13 months.”

But of the latest controversy, he added: “I was disgusted at the story and the timing of it. When I went in to training yesterday the players were flat, the place was like a morgue, and we don’t need that sort of rubbish.

“Let’s see what happens at the hearing. I am happy with what my barrister has told me.” And of the timing of the hearing, Warnock added: “I haven’t got a clue.”

Elsewhere in the Championship, the relegations of Sheffield United and Scunthorpe were confirmed.

United manager Micky Adams said he was “devastated” by demotion but hoped to lead the club next term. “Today is a real low point, but I want to be the manager that brings the club back,” he said.
