Amazon's customer service centre will open in August, a few months before a 1m square-foot order distribution site opens in Dunfermline, Fife.

There will be 500 permanent and 400 temporary jobs at the site in Edinburgh. In January, Amazon said it would take on 750 people for the distribution centre in Dunfermline and another 200 staff at an exisiting site in Gourock, on the Firth of Clyde.

"This news provides a significant boost to the local economy, creates 900 jobs in the heart of Edinburgh, and demonstrates the company's commitment to working in Scotland," said Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland.

More jobs were created in Scotland last year through foreign direct investment than in any other part of the UK, according to Ernst & Young. More than 4,000 jobs resulted from 69 projects, it said in a report published today, while London secured 3,229 jobs from 289 projects.

The customer service hub will also provide technical support for Amazon's Kindle e-readers and MP3 players.
