Levane, a former St. Louis teammate and close friend of Red Holzman, coached the Knicks from 1958-60, compiling a 48-51 record. But was best known as an assistant coach of Holzman’s and a scout until 2004.
Levane, who played for James Madison High and St. John’s, was a basketball savant and one of the most engaging front-office personalities in Knicks history.
“No one could hold court or work a room better,’’ wrote Knicks team historian Dennis D’Agostino in a tribute on the club website yesterday. “Wherever Fuzzy went, laughter and good times followed.’’
In his one full season as Knicks coach, Levane led the club to the playoffs with a 40-32 mark in 1958-59.
