TORONTO — Knicks stars Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony took up the cause of the Trayvon Martin tragedy, wearing hooded sweatshirts in his honor and to make a statement.
Stoudemire wore a gray hooded sweatshirt during pregame warmups. Anthony tweeted a picture of himself to his nearly 2 million followers in a hoodie’ that has become symbolic of racial profiling in the Feb. 26 shooting death of Martin by a neighborhood crime-watch volunteer.
Martin was shot to death by the crime-watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., despite not being armed. Sanford is 20 miles from where Stoudemire grew up in Orlando.
“It’s a tender situation, you want more positive community leaders,’’ Stoudemire said last night. “We got to set better examples for our community, especially as a watchman. You got to be a leader of the community, and set better examples.’’
The Heat have also acted, with LeBron James posting a photo of all 13 Heat players in team-logo hooded sweatshirts at the team hotel. James posted a hashtag #wewantjustice.
