Buyout talks making shares of Liz stylish

Liz Claiborne shares rose as much as 21 percent yesterday after the Wall Street Journal reported that the clothesmaker and retailer had held buyout talks with private-equity firms.

The Journal, citing several sources, said Claiborne in recent months held discussions with several private-equity firms about taking the company private for $20 per share, which would value the company, whose brands include Juicy Couture and Kate Spade, at $2 billion.

Its shares were up 12.9 percent to $13.36 after soaring to $14.32, their highest level since October 2008. The Journal, which said there was no formal auction taking place, said buyout firms KKR, Permira Advisors and Warburg Pincus are among those interested in Claiborne. Permira declined to comment. Spokespersons for KKR and Warburg did not respond to requests for comment.

The company, which will change its name in May to Fifth & Pacific, has named George Carrara, a former Tommy Hilfiger exec, as its new finance and operations chief starting next week.

Magic number at five to win East

The Rangers won’t want to respond to questions when they take the ice for their morning skate at the Garden before facing the Canadiens tonight, but now hear this, ladies and gentlemen of all ages — the Blueshirts’ Magic number is five points to clinch the Eastern Conference title following last night’s Penguins’ loss to the Islanders at the Coliseum.

Any combination of points equalling five which the Rangers, who own the tiebreaker, earn or the Penguins lose over the final five games, and the regular-season Cinderella story will be complete.

But wearing glass skates to the ball will be no guarantee of success. That’s why coach John Tortorella will spend the final nine days of the season seeking to minimize concerns entering the playoffs.

WINNIPEG, CANADA - MARCH 28: Spencer Machacek #46 of the Winnipeg Jets battles against Marc Staal #18 of the New York Rangers as they follow the play up the ice during third period action at the MTS Centre on March 28, 2012 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (Photo by Lance Thomson/NHLI via Getty Images)

One primary concern, that the effectiveness of Marc Staal as it relates to constructing a formidable second pair on defense, was at least somewhat alleviated in the wake of an impressive and assertive performance in Wednesday’s 4-2 victory in Winnipeg. Staal earned the Broadway Hat for that game one night after he was benched for the final 10:30 against the Wild and got just 12:28 of ice overall.

Paired primarily on Wednesday with Anton Stralman through the first two periods, then with Michael Del Zotto after Stralman was eliminated from the equation for all but one shift in the final 13:05, Staal played with a hard edge and at a tempo that have both come and gone as he has attempted to reacclimate himself after missing training camp and the first 36 games of the season with post-concussion symptoms.

Staal was engaged in physical battles throughout while also up the ice supporting the puck in the offensive zone in a welcome display of authority.

The Rangers were able to cope with Staal’s absence into January just as they have been able to cope with Michael Sauer’s absence since the solid second-pair defenseman went down for good with a concussion he sustained on Dec. 5.

But just as there is no doubt the Blueshirts will miss Sauer in the playoffs, they will miss Staal, too, if the alternate captain isn’t able to at least resemble the top-pair, 25-minute force he was prior to being injured in Raleigh on Feb. 22, 2011.

Tortorella has said he will use the final games to experiment with the pairings behind the Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi matchup tandem, but the decision essentially can be distilled to whether it will be Staal or Stralman skating with Del Zotto on the second pair.

Tim Erixon, scratched the last two games, was returned to the AHL Whale yesterday, so if the answer in Staal, that means the right-handed shooting Stralman would have to move to his off side on a third pair with Stu Bickel.

Even so, if Staal is sound and demonstrates the rest of the way he can handle the minutes, the question of whether it’s the alternate captain or Stralman getting the second-pair assignment isn’t much of a question at all, is it?

MLB season opens in Japan with Ichiro leading Mariners over A's

TOKYO -- Ichiro Suzuki had four hits in his return to Japan, Dustin Ackley homered and then singled in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 Wednesday night in baseball's season-opener.

Felix Hernandez combined with two relievers on a six-hitter as Major League Baseball opened its season in Tokyo for the fourth time.

Seattle and Oakland complete their two-game series Thursday. The rest of the big league teams start to get going April 4, when the renamed Miami Marlins open their new ballpark against the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals.

Ackley homered in the fourth off Brandon McCarthy, and Oakland's Kurt Suzuki doubled in a run in the bottom half. The score remained 1-1 until the 11th, when Brendan Ryan doubled against Andrew Carignan (0-1), Chone Figgins sacrificed and Ackley singled to center.

"I was able to put a good swing on that one," Ackley said of his 11th inning hit. "Our team is off to a good start, and that's all that matters."

Jerry Blevins relieved, Ackley stole second and Ichiro Suzuki singled for a two-run lead. Brandon League closed it out for the save.

Tom Wilhelmsen (1-0) got the win with two hitless innings.

Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, who signed a $36 million, four-year contract with Oakland, was 1 for 3 with a seventh-inning double and two strikeouts in his major league debut.

A capacity crowd of 44,227 at Tokyo Dome was a sea of flashbulbs every time Ichiro Suzuki came to bat. He got a standing ovation when he took his position in right field in the final inning.

Ichiro Suzuki, dropped from leadoff to third in the batting order as he started his 12th big league season, singled in the first when be beat shortstop Cliff Pennington's throw after his grounder over the mound was deflected by McCarthy.

Suzuki singled on a grounder to shortstop in the fourth and singled to center in the sixth.

Hernandez, coming off a 14-14 season, allowed five hits in eight innings, struck out six and walked none, throwing 104 pitches.

McCarthy gave up one run and six hits in seven innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

While Oakland threatened repeatedly, the A's were 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

CHSAA boys lacrosse preview

Iona Prep is hell bent on avenging last season. The Gaels were swept in three games against rival Fordham Prep, including the NYCHSAA Class AA boys lacrosse final.

“We don’t have to motivate these kids this year,” Iona coach Rick Trizano said. “There is a feeling in our locker room, there is a feeling on the field -- really a nasty feeling. Very little the coaches need to do to motivate these kids.”

Despite the graduation of attack John Castellano (Curry College) and midfielder Ben Borselino (Western New England), the Gaels bring back plenty of scholarship players on offense. Shane Fee, a 6-foot-3, 160-pound attack, is headed to Bucknell and fellow attack Luke Wooters is a Nazareth commit. They will be joined by the coach’s son Billy.

Robert Cole

Philip Logerfo will try to lead Iona Prep to a CHSAA 'AA' state title tihs season.

“He’s really got all the tools,” the coach said of Fee.

Iona’s one concern will be its depth at midfield led by Scranton-bound senior Phil Logerfo. He will be joined by JV MVP Michael McHugh and Mike Florio, who will be looked to for more offensive production. Sophomore Michael Orefice has a chance to be one of the league’s top faceoff specialists.

“We haven’t had a [true] faceoff guy in three years,” Trizanio said.

The unit with the most stability will be the defense with the entire unit returning. Ross Schnitzer, a Loyola recruit, is joined by senior Tim Hefferon and senior goalie Steve Bonalle. They have the Gaels thinking about reclaiming bragging rights, their league title and state crown.

“Our goal is to win it all,” Trizano said.

Stepinac took its lumps as a ‘AA’ team last year going 0-19 and returned to the ‘A’ under the direction of first-year coach James Goldman, who was an assistant last year.

“There is no one who is going to show us anything we haven’t seen,” Goldman said. “When you play a Chaminade and St. Anthony’s team where seniors are committed D-I, you are not going to see that in the 'A' league. But don’t get me wrong, we are fighting for our spots just like everybody else.”

The Crusaders return 12 players from that team including three-year starter at midfield Nick Shaw, a super athlete who can do a little of everything. Junior midfielder Andrew Murray is expected to be the team’s top goal scoring threat and Vincent O’Toole is Stepinac’s best feeder. Dom Vallario will also see time at attack.

“He’s got a cannon for a shot,” Goldman said of Murray. “We are expecting a lot of goals from him.”

Stepinac is expected to have a versatile defense, including returning goalie Bob DiNapoli. Senior Angelo Narcise is a physical defender and Michael Rooney is the team’s top take-away guy.

Devils lose to Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- It’s a slippery sport all right. Just look how the Devils are skidding toward the playoffs.

Style points, surprisingly, do not exist in the NHL. Earning five of the past possible 14 points, the Devils continues to underwhelm, spinning their wheels in pursuit of a playoff berth.

“We have to win some of these games,” Martin Brodeur said. “No doubt about that.”

Last night, they were beaten 5-2 by the rampaging Penguins, 14-1-1 in their past 16 games, a juggernaut that has the entire NHL quaking.

Regardless of the quality of their conquerors, the Devils should be concerned, suffering their fifth loss (2-4-1) in seven games, managing 10 goals in that span. They scored twice last night, outshooting the Penguins 34-28, as they split the season series 3-3. Stuck on 90 points, the Devils (42-28-6) are in line for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference with six games remaining.

CRUNCH TIME: Penguins star Sidney Crosby, who has battled concussions, is toppled by Andy Greene during the Devils’ 5-2 loss last night in Pittsburgh.

CRUNCH TIME: Penguins star Sidney Crosby, who has battled concussions, is toppled by Andy Greene during the Devils’ 5-2 loss last night in Pittsburgh.

“We have to get our game in order,” coach Pete DeBoer said. “I like us against anybody if we’re playing the right way.

“I’m worried about how we play. The standings will take care of themselves.”

The Devils were exposed on defense last night by the Penguins quick-quick tap-tap head-manning. Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby each had a goal and an assist.

“You gain confidence by winning games, but there’s a difference between confidence and overconfidence,” said Crosby, who has two goals and 11 assists in seven games since returning from his most recent concussion-related absence.

“We’re so focused on playing the right way going into the playoffs. We all understand we can’t afford to look at our previous record.”

The victory pulled the Penguins within a point of the Rangers for the first seed in the East, with seven remaining games apiece and one meeting left April 5.

Perhaps the lone bright spot for the Devils was the return of Travis Zajac, who missed 67 of the first 75 games recovering from Achilles tendon surgery.

Zajac set up Ilya Kovalchuk’s goal that pulled the Devils within one in the third, and was a reminder of what he has meant to the team as its top center for years.

“Shaking off the rust a little bit,” Zajac said after playing 13:31. “I didn’t feel that bad.”

Patrik Elias said, “It’s great to have him back.”

Brodeur felt rotten after handing the Penguins the opening goal 1:04 into play. Malkin stole his clearing attempt behind the net and centered for Chris Kunitz’s 23rd into the open net.

Crosby gave that one back for Zach Parise’s 30th at 5:10. Behind the net, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury passed the puck left to Crosby, who immediately relayed in front, toward Ben Lovejoy, only to see Parise intercept and ram it into the open net.

Devils rookie Adam Larsson committed a costly giveaway when his breakout was picked off by Matt Cooke, who found Jordan Staal cruising netward to fire over Brodeur’s waffle with 55.3 seconds left in the first.

Brodeur held the Devils in it until Pascal Dupuis converted Craig Adams’ rebound off Crosby’s 2-on-1 pass at 15:24 of the second. Dupuis’ 10-game point streak is the longest current in the NHL.

Zajac gave the Devils their last hope by setting up Kovalchuk’s 32nd at 3:37 of the third. But Crosby reopened the Penguins’ two-goal lead 1:18 later, chipping the puck past Marek Zidlicky to score his fourth of the season on a breakaway, and Malkin hit the empty net for Pittsburgh’s second 5-2 victory over the Devils in nine days.

Brodeur is celebrating the 20th anniversary today of his first NHL game and victory, 4-2 over the Bruins at the Meadowlands. ... Anton Volchenkov sat out with a lower body injury, and Matt Taormina rejoined lineup after sitting out 10 games, paired with Larsson in defense. ... The Devils play host to the Blackhawks tomorrow.

Breaking of the code

ON THE MONEY

A Lower East Side tech startup stumbled this week, facing a storm of online criticism over fostering sexism.

Sqoot, a year-old daily deals platform, was forced to cancel a hackathon — where a mostly male audience of programmers trouble-shoot code — scheduled for next week after the company made an offensive comment about women on its website.

The company and its CEO, Mo Yehia, 30, have been apologizing nonstop for the incident, which became the latest example of boys behaving badly in the male-dominated tech world.

Sqoot’s online event page listed a number of “perks” hackers could expect at the hackathon.

Fergie

Starpix

Fergie

They were going for a party-like atmosphere with DJ and drinks, but crossed the line when it listed among the amenities:

“Women: Need another beer? Let one of our friendly (female) event staff get that for you.”

Yehia and his team were made aware within hours of the posting that a number of women in tech were not amused. The Twitter critics were chirping loudly, assailing the “women behind the bar” attitude.

Yehia said Friday that the event was called off as he and his team do some soul-searching. A number of sponsors had already backed out.

In a phone interview, Yehia seemed emotional. He said he shocked himself with the insensitivity of the comment and regretted that he was blind to the obvious potential for offense.

Garett Sloane

Surprising Cash King

How humiliating for Apple!

Despite the computer-maker’s widely trumpeted decision this week to share some of its mind-blowing $97.6 billion cash pile in dividends and a share-buyback program, it’s not the king of cash in tech land.

The laurels go to its nemesis, Microsoft. Sure, Apple is head and shoulders above the Windows-based company when its short- and long-term cash piles are combined.

But the iPad maker has $67 billion tied up in long-term investments like US Treasuries and commercial paper, leaving it only $30 billion in readily available cash.

When it comes to short-term liquid assets that can be turned into cash within 12 months — like boring bank CDs and Treasuries — Steve Ballmer’s firm catapults to the No. 1 spot.

Microsoft has a stunning $50.7 billion in short-term cash, 69 percent more than Apple, according to data compiled by Capital IQ.

In a much quieter announcement than Apple’s, Microsoft recently declared a quarterly dividend of 20 cents per share.

It gets more painful in this game of bragging rights. No. 2 among the tech titans is Cisco, with $46.7 billion in short-term cash. That puts Apple at lowly No. 5, behind No. 3 Google ($43.3 billion) and No. 4 Oracle ($31 billion.)

Still, Apple can claim supremacy — overseas. That’s where it has parked an estimated $64 billion in cash, compared with Microsoft’s estimated $57 billion bundle.

Just don’t say that Apple is the cash king here at home. “You can’t negate the $50.7 billion at Microsoft,” Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P, told On the Money, referring to Microsoft’s short-term cash. “It comes down almost to a game of guts.”

John Aiden Byrne

High Spirits

Voli Light is hoping to jump onto the top shelf after rolling out its newest partner, Fergie.

The New York-based, privately held distiller, which also recruited rapper Pitbull to help nail down the male demographic in pitching its clear, low-calorie beverage, believes Fergie — the lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas — can entice women to turn the company into a powerhouse in the multibillion-dollar US vodka market.

The six-time Grammy Award-winner wasn’t interested in just being the company’s eye candy, as her title of partner and co-owner allows for an equity share and the responsibility of working with marketing and advertising teams.

“Like any businesswoman, I want the brand to do well,” Fergie told OTM. “Voli is the perfect solution for an active, healthy girl on the go, so when I heard about it, I wanted in.”

The CEO of Voli Light Vodkas, Adam Kamenstein, is ecstatic to have her in the fold.

“As a brand that appeals to women as well as men, it has always been our goal to align with a vibrant, fun and sexy female such as Fergie,” gushed Kamenstein.

Knicks Amar’e, Carmelo wear hoodies to honor Trayvon Martin

TORONTO — Knicks stars Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony took up the cause of the Trayvon Martin tragedy, wearing hooded sweatshirts in his honor and to make a statement.

Stoudemire wore a gray hooded sweatshirt during pregame warmups. Anthony tweeted a picture of himself to his nearly 2 million followers in a hoodie’ that has become symbolic of racial profiling in the Feb. 26 shooting death of Martin by a neighborhood crime-watch volunteer.

Martin was shot to death by the crime-watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., despite not being armed. Sanford is 20 miles from where Stoudemire grew up in Orlando.

“It’s a tender situation, you want more positive community leaders,’’ Stoudemire said last night. “We got to set better examples for our community, especially as a watchman. You got to be a leader of the community, and set better examples.’’

The Heat have also acted, with LeBron James posting a photo of all 13 Heat players in team-logo hooded sweatshirts at the team hotel. James posted a hashtag #wewantjustice.

Jets safety Landry proclaims he's healthy

New Jets safety LaRon Landry expects to be fully healthy for the 2012 season and to have a major impact.

“When I’m healed and I can perform the way I know how to perform, the sky’s the limit,” Landry said. “Unstoppable.”

The problem for Landry has been staying healthy. A left Achilles’ tendon injury ended each of his last two seasons with the Redskins early. He has missed 15 games over the last two years.

But the 27-year-old Landry said yesterday the injury was not actually in his Achilles, but lower in his heel bone. That is why he opted not to have surgery performed.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said the team would be smart about Landry’s recovery. It sounds as if Landry will be limited during the team’s offseason program and minicamps.

“We’re going to work as a partnership to get him ready for opening day,” Tannenbaum said. “Barring something unforeseen, we think he’ll be ready to go.”

Landry said criticism of his pass coverage skills is wrong, and is confident he can play either safety position in coach Rex Ryan’s defense.

* Tannenbaum was asked about linebacker Bart Scott, whom the team is trying to trade.

“Bart’s under contract,” Tannenbaum said. “He’s been in a couple of times. I’ve seen him in the building. He’s going to be here for the offseason program. He’s under contract. That’s where we are.”

* Tannnenbaum said the team has not closed the door on free agent safety Jim Leonhard. ... He said nothing was “on the horizon” with former wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, who is currently a free agent. ... Tannenbaum said new wide receiver Chaz Schilens has a chance to be a starter but nothing is guaranteed.

Caroline Kennedy hitting campaign trail for Obama in Florida

Caroline Kennedy is returning to the campaign trail for President Obama this week, helping mark the anniversary of the passage of healthcare reform legislation.

Kennedy is scheduled to headline the opening of the latest Obama campaign field office in the battleground state of Florida on Thursday, and host an event as part of the campaign's outreach to female voters.

Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, offered Obama a key endorsement in the 2008 Democratic primary, along with her uncle, the late Sen. Edward Kennedy. The events this week will be her first for the reelection effort in her role as a national co-chairman.

She is to speak on behalf of the issue the former Massachusetts senator long championed in Congress, and "remind Floridians of the president's leadership" on healthcare reform, according to the campaign.

It was two years ago today that the House of Representatives passed Obama's landmark healthcare reform measure. There are no plans for the president himself to mark the milestone -- he's traveling out West today to speak about energy. But the campaign is, using local events such as the one Kennedy is attending to continue mobilizing supporters and reaching out to voters.

Kennedy's campaign foray also comes as Democrats are placing special emphasis on female voters. The Democratic National Committee released a Web video Wednesday to highlight what it calls GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's "extreme positions on women's health." It features Romney's recent comment in a television interview that he would "get rid" of Planned Parenthood.

Vice President Joe Biden is also heading to Florida later this week for the second in a series of campaign speeches meant to frame the general-election choice for voters in the fall.

Why Royalty Rules in the NCAA Tournament

A funny thing happened on the way to the Sweet 16.

NCAA/031912ncaa_512x288.jpg"/>

Did your bracket the opening rounds of March Madness? Can it last through the Sweet Sixteen? The Wall Street Journal sports team breaks down the big winners and losers of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament.

After a weekend of upsets and who-dat matchups that echoed the chaos we've seen in recent years, the teams that made it to the NCAA tournament's fourth round are remarkable in one respect: An unprecedented number of them are members of college basketball's royal class.

The tournament's 16 remaining teams have won 34 titles between them. And it's not just one or two pedigreed schools: A total of 13 of the 16 have won the national title before, the most in any Sweet 16 field in history.

In fact, even without Duke and UCLA, eight of the 18 teams that have the most Sweet 16 appearances are still alive, including three of the top four.

But wait, there's even more bad news for the basketball peasantry. Nine of the 20 schools that spend the most on men's basketball are in this year's Sweet 16. Plus, there are 92 active NBA players representing every program still in the dance, with the exception of Ohio, the only true Cinderella.

As fun as it may be to see a passel of serfs in their oddly colored rags taking on the sport's robed patricians, many basketball fans are secretly happy that the unwashed masses have been left outside the arena.

[NCAA5] Sports Illustrated/Getty Images

N.C. State coach Jim Valvano celebrated after the 1983 title game.

"People like and expect the Lehighs, Norfolk States and Ohio Universities," said former Bowling Green and Indiana coach Dan Dakich, now an ESPN analyst. "But people want the powers."

So here's a question: Is there something about having royal blood that can propel a team in the tournament?

It certainly doesn't hurt recruiting. Bob Hurley, the basketball coach at New Jersey's St. Anthony, said the kings of college hoops have an advantage because they're "brands" that top-tier recruits recognize. He notes UCLA, which didn't make the tournament this year (but has more titles (11) than any school), signed his top player this season, Kyle Anderson.

For title favorites like Kentucky and North Carolina, their success tends to be self-perpetuating. Because these schools often advance to the tournament's late rounds, they benefit from more exposure. "These are teams that sustain themselves by being there," Hurley said.

Bob Knight's 1976 Indiana squad is the last major team to finish the season undefeated.

Recruiting has changed a lot since the bluebloods ruled the kingdom, of course. Most elite recruits no longer grow up with dreams of playing for Kentucky or North Carolina, said Tom Konchalski, a New York-based high-school talent evaluator. Instead, he said, "they grow up dreaming of playing in the NBA." But having a pedigree helps in that regard, too: They get a lot more TV exposure.

This season, 23 of North Carolina's 30 regular-season games aired on national TV, with the others available on regional stations or ESPN3.

This year's royal ascent has less to do with Carolina and Kentucky than it does the renaissance of Indiana and North Carolina State, two programs that squeezed out the usual mid-major darlings. These two programs, located in two of the sport's heart-and-soul states, have seven combined national titles but just two Sweet 16 appearances in the last decade.

Indiana watched Butler, whose entire athletic department makes less in revenue than Indiana does on men's basketball alone, advance to consecutive NCAA tournament finals—including one in Indianapolis. The state of North Carolina, meanwhile, is home to three of the last seven national champions (except they belong to North Carolina and Duke).

[NCAA4] Associated Press

Michigan State guard Earvin "Magic" Johnson was the most outstanding player of the 1979 Final Four.

These programs were turned around in opposite ways. Indiana hired coach Tom Crean in 2008 and faced a long road back. The Hoosiers were 28-66 in his first three seasons in front of crowds that dwindled so much that Indiana dropped the price of balcony seats to $5.

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack missed the NCAA tournament in all five years of ex-coach Sidney Lowe's tenure. Current coach Mark Gottfried, a former ESPN analyst, was hardly the school's first option as his replacement. But he inherited enough raw talent that the team flourished right away. Now N.C. State is the tournament's hottest team. Both the Hoosiers and Wolfpack have top-five recruiting classes coming next year, too.

And their next games against fellow aristocrats Kentucky and Kansas this week will be less a dance than a royal ballet.

Marquette defeats Murray State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Murray State desperately wanted to feel the moment, savor a first-ever Sweet 16 appearance.

Before the Racers faced Marquette yesterday in the third round of the NCAA tournament’s West Region, coach Steve Prohm had spoken so eloquently — almost wistfully — about “visualizing what that moment will be like when you see your 14 guys celebrating going to the Sweet 16.’’

So with 7:39 remaining at the KFC Yum! Center and Murray State holding a five-point lead, its largest of the game, the Racers could taste the nectar they dreamed about taking a bite of in Phoenix later this week.

HOW SWEET IT IS: Marquette’s Jae Crowder celebrates as the Golden Eagles rallied beat Murray State, 62-53, yesterday in Louisville.

HOW SWEET IT IS: Marquette’s Jae Crowder celebrates as the Golden Eagles rallied beat Murray State, 62-53, yesterday in Louisville.

Then something went horribly wrong.

COMPLETE NCAA COVERAGE

NCAA TOURNAMENT BRACKET

VIDEO: COACH, PLAYER REACTIONS

The Racers ran out the fuel that had brought them 31 wins in their first 32 games this season. Murray State couldn’t buy a basket with a fistful of $50 bills and an oversized hoop.

Marquette, the No. 3 seed, outscored Murray State 22-7 the rest of the way and raced to a 62-53 victory to advance to its second consecutive Sweet 16 appearance.

“We’re lucky and thankful to have played the way we did in second half to finish the game,’’ said Marquette coach Buzz Williams, who virtually lost his voice during the game.

Prohm was philosophical about the defeat.

“I told the players in the locker room, I wish I could have figured out a way to get them through the last the last seven minutes,’’ Prohm said. “I’m so sick right now, because I’m reliving the last seven minutes. I’m just sick because it’s over and I thought we had a really, really great opportunity to make a really, really long run in this tournament.

“I thought we belonged. We didn’t win, but I think everybody saw that we belonged.’’

Marquette won with a will-crushing 13-2 run that was capped by a dagger-like 3-pointer from its best player, Jae Crowder (his only trey of the game).

The Crowder 3-pointer elicited loud chants of “MVP! MVP! MVP!’’ from the Golden Eagles faithful, who were vastly outnumbered in the arena by Kentucky fans cheering the locals from Murray State, a little over 200 miles away.

After a baseline drive basket by Jewaun Long to give Murray State the 46-41 lead with 7:39 remaining, the Racers made only two field goals the rest of the game.

Crowder, who right before the killer 3-pointer that gave Marquette a 54-48 lead with 4:04 remaining, had drawn a charge, knew the gravity of the moment, how big his play was.

“I knew we were a couple plays away from closing the game out and I wanted to make the big play to put us in position to win,’’ he said. “I knew at that time it was big.’’

With Murray State having gone frigid offensively, Marquette iced the game by making 7 of 8 free throws in the final 53.4 seconds of the game.

Crowder persevered through a poor first half of shooting to lead the Golden Eagles with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Darius Johnson-Odom also scored 17 for Marquette.

Murray State, usually a strong 3-point shooting team, was miserable from long distance, shooting just 4-of-21. The Racers’ leading scorer, Isaiah Canaan, shot 4-of-17, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range, finishing with 16 points.

“That’s where our points come from, that’s what we’ve relied on all year,’’ said Murray State’s Donte Poole, who shot 3-of-13 overall and was 1-of-9 on 3-pointers. “That’s what we’ve made our living with. We’ve got to live with it or die with it and today we just died with it.’’

Sixth-seeded Murray State, which entered the game as the only one-loss team in the nation, now has a 3-15 all-time record in the NCAA tournament and remains without a Sweet 16 appearance.

Twice before this season, Murray State played in a game to advance to the Sweet 16 but failed. In 1988 as a 14th seed, the Racers lost to eventual national champion Kansas, 61-58. In 2010 as a 14th seed, the Racers were denied by eventual national runner-up Butler, 54-52.

Louisville 59, New Mexico 56

Russ Smith had 17 points as Louisville held off New Mexico in a third-round South Regional for its sixth consecutive win to advance to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2009.

Kyle Kuric added 10 points for the Big East tournament champions, who lost their first game of the NCAA tournament the past two seasons.

Trailing 53-46, New Mexico’s Drew Gordon hit a pair of free throws, and Demetrius Walker made a 3-pointer to pull to within 53-51 with 1:36 left. Smith made a pair of free throws for fourth-seeded Louisville (28-9), but Gordon answered with a tip-in.

Kentucky tops Iowa State, heads to another Sweet 16

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One visual made no sense: The sea of Kentucky blue packing the KFC Yum! Center, the home of the Kentucky’s arch-rival Louisville, looked as out of place as John Calipari coaching a high school team.

The other visual, however, made perfect sense: Kentucky advancing to the Sweet 16, a place that is as much home for the Wildcats as Lexington.

Kentucky, the No. 1 overall seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, is headed to yet another regional semifinal after last night’s 87-71 win over Iowa State in a third-round South Region game. The 34-2 Wildcats will play Indiana, which handed them one of their two losses this season, on Friday in Atlanta.

FIRED UP: Kentucky coach John Calipari (left) talks with freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on the sideline during the Wildcats’ 87-71 victory against Iowa State in the South Region last night.

This is Kentucky’s third consecutive Sweet 16 appearance in Calipari’s three seasons in Lexington. Since 1992, the Wildcats have gone to 15 regional semifinals.

“Cal after the game came up to me and told me that’s the best game they played all year,’’ Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said.

“That’s about as good as we can play,’’ Calipari said. “I’ve got good basketball team. I’ve got good players, but they’re a good team. They’re efficient. They play defense. They play hard. They’re skilled. I’ve just got to keep them in the right frame of mind. I want them to have fun playing. I want to keep challenging them.

“I want them to look at this and be happy but not satisfied. Let’s just keep stepping.’’

Kentucky had the upper hand virtually all night, with No. 8 seed Iowa State hanging on to stay in it.

Iowa State hurt itself where it usually helps itself most — shooting from 3-point range — missing 19 of 22 attempts from deep.

“They shoot 10-for-20 from 3-point range, and our biggest strength is the 3 and we go 3-for-22,’’ Hoiberg said. “We’re not going to win many games like that.’’

Kentucky’s strategy was to make Iowa State’s best player, Royce White, beat them, not the rest of the Cyclones. White got his points (23), but the Wildcats stymied the rest of his teammates by using their length to thwart the outside shots.

Iowa State guard Chris Allen, a transfer who played in two Final Fours with Michigan State, had a miserable shooting night, scoring 16 points on 6-of-19 shooting, including 1-for-10 from 3-point range.

The game got out of hand for Iowa State (23-11) midway through the second half when Hoiberg was called for technical foul after jawing with an official following a Cyclones turnover.

With 11:35 remaining, Kentucky’s Anthony Davis (15 points, 12 rebounds) drained the two free throws for the technical to put Kentucky up 57-44, its largest lead of the game. A moment later, Darius Miller (19 points) buried a 3-pointer for a 60-44 lead and moments later, two Miller free throws made it 62-44 with 10:24 remaining in the game.

The free throws capped a frenetic 20-2 run in a span of six minutes by Kentucky after the game had been tied 42-42.

Once the Wildcats took the large lead it seemed to liberate their players even more. Marquis Teague (24 points) and Doron Lamb (16 points) hit 3-pointers then jump shot shots by Miller and Lamb again gave Kentucky a 72-52 bulge with 7:17 left.

Two consecutive layups by Teague then made it 76-52 and garbage time had set in.

By night’s end, it all made sense: The winningest team in college basketball with the most talented team in the country continued its march deeper into March.

Nasdaq Closes Above 3000

Stocks soared to multiyear highs as investors welcomed a trifecta of positive signals on the economy from U.S. consumers, the banking system and the Federal Reserve.

The Nasdaq Composite finished above the 3000 level for the first time since December 2000, adding 56 points, to close at 3039.88. The Dow gained 218 points to end at its highest level since May 2008. Jonathan Cheng has details on The News Hub.

The Nasdaq Composite Index surged 1.9% to its first close above 3000 since late 2000. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 217.97 points, or 1.7%, to 13177.68, its highest level since December 2007, and the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index barreled toward 1400, a level it hasn't seen since June 2008.

For all three indexes, Tuesday's jump was the biggest in point and percentage terms this year.

Investors started the day on a positive note after the Commerce Department said retail sales gained 1.1% in February from the month before. The gains held after the Fed took a brighter view on the economy, but made clear that officials plan to maintain a loose monetary policy despite those improvements.

Then and Now

The most powerful move came in the final hour of trading, after blue-chip financial company J.P. Morgan Chase said the Fed had signed off on the bank's plan to raise its dividend and launch a new round of share buybacks. That was followed by announcements from several banks that they had passed the Fed's "stress tests."

"Strong retail sales, an upbeat Fed and positive news from banks all worked to pull money off the sidelines today," said Michael Cippoletti, head of U.S. equity capital markets for BMO Capital Markets. He said investors were willing to overlook any concerns that the Fed may be less likely to step up its bond-buying plans, which some investors had expected after a Wall Street Journal article last week raised the prospect of further bond purchases by the Fed. Investors have driven stock prices higher in recent years as the Fed launched bond purchases to lower interest rates and support the U.S. economy.

"People were more interested in seeing a positive tone from the Fed than in more easing," Mr. Cippoletti said.

Concerns over the health of U.S. banks have cast a shadow over the recent recovery, and the stress-test results, showing most U.S. banks would be well-capitalized in the event of an economic downturn, helped allay some of those worries.

J.P. Morgan soared 7% and Bank of America gained 6.3% to lead Dow components, which saw all 30 of its members finish in positive territory. In a reflection of the breadth of the rally, just 5% of the S&P 500 stocks finished the day lower.

Still, details continued to emerge after the close, including news that Citigroup, SunTrust Banks and MetLife didn't meet the minimum capital threshold required by the Fed. Citigroup, which rose 6.3% during regular trading hours, fell 3.5% in after-hours trading; MetLife, which was 4.7% higher at the closing bell, dropped 3.7% after hours.

In the bond market, investors dumped long-term Treasury debt, driving yields higher. The Fed has been a big buyer of long-term U.S. bonds, snapping up roughly $238 billion since October. Without any signs that the Fed was about to embark on another round of bond buying, bond prices sank. The yield on the 10-year note rose to 2.102%, its highest yield in more than three months, from 2.030% Monday.

The run-up added another spark of excitement to a year that has gone better than many investors could have foreseen. The Dow has suffered only one day of triple-digit point declines this year, amid a lull in Europe's sovereign-debt crisis and a run of strong U.S. economic data.

Tuesday's gain was the fifth consecutive for the Dow, the longest such streak since mid-September. Surging technology stocks, which were among the strongest performers of the day, helped propel the Nasdaq up 56.22 points, or 1.9%, at 3039.88, its highest close since November 2000.

The index, which had peaked at 5048.62 in March of that year, continued its swoon through Oct. 9, 2002, when it bottomed at 1114.11. This year, the Nasdaq has climbed 17%, leading the major U.S. indexes.

Technology stocks recently have been attracting investors of all types, including those that favor growth stocks, seen as more risky but likely to rise faster than average, and those that prefer "value" stocks, companies that are slower growing but are profitable and offer compensation such as dividends.

"In 2000, it was approaching a mania, a must-own-at-all-costs mentality," said Jim Russell, who helps manage $103 billion as chief equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management. This time, he said, "the earnings have come through and it's justified the run-up in these stocks."

In other corporate news, Urban Outfitters reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings that fell shy of estimates as gross margins narrowed due to increased markdowns. The apparel retailer slumped 1.56, or 5.3%, to 27.95, the biggest percentage decliner on the S&P 500.

GNC Holdings said it likely will beat its first-quarter earnings projection after it recorded stronger-than-expected sales at existing stores through February. The nutritional-supplement retailer rose 2.71, or 8.7%, to 33.95.

Barnes & Noble named Michael P. Huseby, a Cablevision Systems veteran, as its chief financial officer. The appointment is expected to help the bookseller as it undergoes a tech-focused transformation. Barnes & Noble rose 77 cents, or 5.7%, to 124.54.

Red Bulls lose opener to FC Dallas

FRISCO, Texas — Zach Loyd and Ricardo Villar scored to help FC Dallas beat the Red Bulls 2-1 yesterday in the season opener for both teams.

Villar’s goal in the 61st minute gave FC Dallas a 2-0 lead. Villar got a through ball from Blas Perez and chipped it over the head of Ryan Meara when the goalie came out of the box to try to defend the shot.

The Red Bulls Kenny Cooper scored in the 78th minute with a shot from the top right corner of the goalie’s box.

The Red Bulls knocked FC Dallas out of the MLS Cup Playoffs last season with a 2-0 win in a wild-card match on the road.

Loyd scored from 10 yards away in the 11th minute, sending a shot into the left corner of the net. Perez assisted on the goal.

It’s a ‘hugue’ place

GIMME SHELTER

The fabulous apartments of late copper heiress Huguette Clark will soon officially be on the market with Brown Harris Stevens broker Mary Rutherfurd, Gimme Shelter has learned.

When Clark died last year at 104, real estate insiders gushed that her apartments — which total 42 rooms and a massive 17,000 square feet of space — that she had amassed at 907 Fifth Ave. could be worth $100 million. To add to the mystique, Clark did not live there, though she had the space immaculately cleaned and staffed a few times a week — it was home to her spooky doll collection.

However, insiders tell The Post the property is really estimated to be worth around $45 million to $60 million because the space consists of three unconnected apartments and the ultra-strict co-op board has not yet ruled on whether or not the two Clark apartments on the eighth floor can be joined. Brokers said the eighth-floor apartments could fetch a total between $20 million and $35 million. Combined, they’d be worth more.

“It’s a great opportunity to own more than 10,000 square feet on Fifth Avenue,” one source who has walked through the units says.

There’s also a 12th-floor apartment that could be priced around $25 million.

This news comes shortly after Manhattan Surrogate’s Court Judge Kristin Booth Glen called Clark’s lawyer, Wallace Block, and accountant, Irving Kamsler, “unfit to serve” and suspended them from administrating Clark’s affairs after they were suspected of taking advantage of the elderly heiress.

Clark’s relatives are also challenging her will, claiming fraud by its beneficiaries: Block, Kamsler and her nurse, Hadassah Peri.

Obi-Want to live downtown

Scottish movie star Ewan McGregor is on the hunt for a posh downtown pad.

The “Star Wars” actor was spotted checking out a penthouse triplex condo at 58 Reade St. The four-bedroom, 3 1/2- bathroom, 4,464-square-foot TriBeCa apartment is listed for $8.995 million.

The condo, which has key-locked elevator access, boasts 1,200 square feet of outdoor space and a “restaurant-grade” kitchen with stainless-steel counters and a breakfast bar. Upstairs, an open living area with 18-foot ceilings could make for a great entertaining space — with terraces to the north and south, along with its own refrigerator, dishwasher and wet bar.

The building, which dates back to 1915, was converted to condos in 2001.

Hamptons-go-round

Adebayo Ogunlesi, a Nigerian finance executive, is buying venture capitalist John Pickett’s beach mansion on Great Plains Road in Southampton for $24 million — far less than its $38 million asking price.

Pickett, the former owner of the NHL’s New York Islanders, renovated the 17,000-square-foot mansion with architect Francis Fleetwood. Pickett bought the home, which comes with 200-year-old beech trees, for $5.5 million in 2001.

Corcoran Group listing broker Tim Davis declined to comment.

Meanwhile, Pickett is downsizing on the East End. He just bought a $3 million home on Cobblefield Lane in Southampton. That home was owned by Denis P. Coleman, a former executive at Bear Stearns.

Ogunlesi, former chief client officer at Credit Suisse First Boston, once clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

On your Mark

The Mark is back on the market, with seven units ranging from $8.65 million to $60 million just listed at its desirable 25 E. 77th St. address.

For $60 million, a buyer can get a five-bedroom, 9,799-square-foot unit. Other apartments include a four-bedroom, 3,789-square-foot unit listed for $18.75 million.

Sales at the luxury hotel/residential building were able to commence again after developer Alexico Group’s Izak Senbahar and Simon Elias recapitalized the project. Corcoran Sunshine is marketing five of the units, while Corcoran Group broker Lauren Muss has the $18.75 million listing and Sotheby’s Serena Boardman and Eva Mohr have a three-bedroom, 3,183-square-foot, $15.75 million listing.

We hear . . .

That iconic artist Jeff Koons and his architect, Richard Olcott, are close to beginning construction of Koons’ mega-mansion. The project will connect two East 67th Street buildings to create a 21,500-square-foot home. At Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s recent Art for Water benefit, Koons told us that he and his wife need the space for their five children — and that they are even contemplating a sixth child . . . MMA ready for NYC

Mixed Martial Arts has been banned in New York state since 1997, just before the sport took off. But with the Izod Center in New Jersey hosting a UFC card featuring three matches on May 5, it has sparked debate about why New York is one of just five states that deems Mixed Martial Arts illegal.

“I’ve been saying that for like four years,” UFC President Dana White said yesterday at Radio City Music Hall in a press conference for the event. “We’ve been dealing with this for the last 11 years, not just in New York, but all around the world.”

Fox is in the midst of a seven-year deal with UFC, keeping contests on the network until at least 2018. That exposure alone (as opposed to matches being shown on cable or as pay-per-view events) creates more of an interest, and New York would surely benefit from this.

“We don’t come back here enough. So it’s good to be back on the East Coast,” White said.

CHSAA state girls basketball notebook: Vaughan nets 1,000th point for shorthanded Ford

Shanice Vaughan was going to do everything in her power to keep Bishop Ford’s season alive on a night it was shorthanded.

“I wanted to win,” the UTEP-bound guard said. “I felt I had to step up for my team.”

Vaughan ended her career with one of her best performance and a milestone. She paced Ford with 26 points, five treys and 11 rebounds in a disappointing 58-51 loss to Archdiocesan champion Moore Catholic in the CHSAA Class AA girls basketball quarterfinals Wednesday night at St. Francis Prep.

“That's just a senior determined not to let today be her last senior game of high school basketball,” Falcons coach Mike Toro said. “She tried her best, but unfortunately the outcome wasn’t what she wanted.”

An Rong Xu

Bishop Ford's Shanice Vaughan scored her 1,000th point in a loss to Moore Catholic.

Vaughan scored the 1,000th point of her career on an 18-foot runner in the second quarter. She finished with 1,018 for her career. Aaliyah Lewis had eight points and Jill Conroy seven. Vaughan said assistant coach and statistician Mary Gillespie didn’t tell her she was approaching the mark last night.

“It felt good,” she said. “I wanted to break it, but I didn’t know I was that close to it. She kept me updated, but after awhile she stopped telling me.”

Ford (22-6) played without start guard Aaliyah Jones and reserve Jeane Jennings, who were suspended for the game due to what Toro called a "coach’s decision." Center Brittany (Pookie) Martin only played the second half. She was a game time decision after suffering an asthma attack after the Falcons loss to Christ the King last Saturday in the Brooklyn/Queen final.

“I feel it’s a major letdown,” said Toro, who has battled anxiety this season, "I feel this was a very rough end of the season and I regret some of the stuff that had to happen at the end of the season. I felt this was our best chance to really make a run at a state title.”

He watched Moore Catholic guards Jamie O’Hare and Christina Rubin combine for 43 points and nine 3-pointers. O’Hare’s trey with 2:40 left in the game put the Mavericks (21-5) up for good. Ford got within 52-51 with 53 seconds remaining, but Dina Motrechuk nailed a jumper with 31 ticks left and the Falcons proceeded to turn the ball over. Toro felt his team forced the issue in the closing minutes.

“We showed time and time again we can win with anybody who is on the team,” Toro said. “We didn’t get the job done, but we are going to have more opportunities. This is not the last time you are going to hear about Bishop Ford being a contender.”

Molloy’s Drogler excels doing the little things: Patti Dorgler read the situation perfectly – as usual.

The Archbishop Molloy junior saw a St. Anthony’s ball hander swarmed by two defenders and another Friar streaking up the left side line late in overtime.

“I just figured she was going to pass it,” Dorgler said.

She jumped the passing lane and collected her third and biggest steal of the game. There was a moment of trepidation as Drogler had to dribble the ball up, a job usually reserved for Amani Tatum. On the ensuing possession Kamille Ejerta buried a 3-pointer from the right corner to put the Stanners up four with 40 seconds left to play. It help the Stanners come way with a 58-55 upset of the nationally ranked Friars in the CHSAA Class AA quarterfinals.

“That was the greatest feeling ever,” Drogler said.

Added Tatum: “It’s just what she does. It never goes unnoticed what she does.”

The steal was the cap to another typical blue-collar performance. She scored 10 points and tool three charges. Drogler, who joked that she flops, said she doesn't view herself as something she is not and realizes she doesn’t need to be a 20-point scorer. She just tries to excel at the aspects of games she is good at, and playing hard and smart whenever she is on the floor. He brother Chris was a star on the Molloy boys team and is now a freshman at St. Rose.

“I don’t think I’ve had to second guess her once all year,” Molloy coach Scott Lagas said. “She’s been great.”

Lagas called her his biggest surprise when the year started, but that’s change. Now she is one of the team’s most steady contributors.

“I’ve never actually done this good for the entire season,” Dorgler said. “I felt like this could be our last game, so I wanted to go out with a big bang.”

Jacobs: I won’t ‘sell my soul’

Brandon Jacobs knows the only way he remains with the Giants is if he accepts a cut in salary and he has already stated he is willing to. But he will only go so far when it comes to giving back money.

“I want to stay in New York a whole lot, man, because this is where I started,” Jacobs said yesterday in an interview with Bruce Beck of WNBC-TV. “It’s a great organization. I got wonderful, great teammates. I won a second Super Bowl here with this organization. But I’m not willing to sell my soul, you know? It’s a great organization and I want to be a part of it, but if not, if they’re not feeling the same way, then so be it.”

UPDATES FROM OUR GIANTS BLOG

Jacobs, scheduled to make $4.4 million in 2012, also has a $500,000 roster bonus to be paid March 17 — if he is on the roster. If an adjusted contract agreement cannot be reached before that time, it is likely Jacobs would be cut before the Giants opt to pay him the bonus. Free agency begins March 13 and so a decision regarding Jacobs is looming in the next two weeks.

“I have no idea,” Jacobs said when asked what he expected will happen. “I don’t know what they’re thinking. I want to be here. If not, there are 31 other teams out there.

“As far as I’m concerned I got another year left on my contract. I don’t know why I’m sitting here saying all this stuff. If they want it to work out it’s going to work out. If they don’t want it to work out, it’s not going to work out. That’s all I can say.”

Jacobs, 29, accepted a pay-cut prior to this past season, a move that kept him on the roster. He did not have a big season, however, rushing 152 times for 571 yards and seven touchdowns. It was the least-productive season for Jacobs since 2006.
