L'oeuvre tourist fatigue

Did I mention how crowded the place is? Queues pretty much everywhere and we didn't even bother trying to go see the Mona Lisa. You end up in one of the quieter wings just to escape and get a bit of breathing space. Resting tired legs on a comfy bench is a great way to recuperate and prepare for another few hours in and amongst the masses.

Motivated and loaded, MLK out for revenge

Martin Jacobson turned off his phone and flipped on his television in an attempt to lose himself in a steady stream of horror movies. He figured the flicks could distract him from reality: For the first time in 15 years his dynastic Martin Luther King Jr. boys soccer team wasn’t playing in the PSAL Class A final.

But none of the films he watched could wash his memory of the agonizing, extra-time loss to underdog arch rival Beacon, which went on to win its second title. They didn’t scare him; reality upset him.

“That was a pretty hard day,” he said. “It was devastating.”

Martin Luther King Jr. coach Martin Jacboson speaks talks to his players during practice.

Midfielder <a href=arek Beckles will be one of MLK's top threats. " title="Midfielder arek Beckles will be one of MLK's top threats. " width="300" height="450" src="/rw/nypost/2011/08/26/sports/web_photos/mlk4--300x450.JPG" />

Jacobson couldn’t watch soccer for four months. His players were equally hurt. Star senior Ibrahim Diaby went as far as to say a championship this fall won’t even make him feel better. Playmaking center midfielder Bryan Moya took a month off from training.

“Every time I played, I had memories of that game,” he said.

The Knights haven’t talked about it much, looking to put the heartbreaking loss behind them. But it’s still there – they return nine of 11 starters from last year’s club – at least Jacobson hopes. It is for him.

“I won’t be happy,” he said, “until we win.”

He did seem pleased this week as the healing process began with full squad practices. He has an absurdly deep roster of 30 – nearly the amount of most football teams in the city – and in addition to the nine returning starters, a few new toys to play with.

“Our second team would do well, finish in the final eight,” he said.

Diaby said: “We got a lot of talent, we got a lot of guys that play in soccer academies. A lot of people improved. We’re going to be very good.”

He expects the 6-foot-1 Diaby to replace last year’s star, Moriken (Chelsea) Sangary, up front. Out of center midfield, Diaby had six goals and 12 assists as a junior, and he’s only progressed. While he lacks Sangary’s game-breaking speed, he has a rocket for a shot in either foot and size and quickness to beat defenders in different ways.

“He’s the best player in the city,” Jacobson said of Diaby, who plays academy soccer with the New York Cosmos U-23 team. “He’s gonna score a ton of goals.”

The elusive Moya will be the Knights’ playmaker, with explosive wingers Tarek Beckles, Jethro Dede out wide and Steven Carvajal seeing time alongside Diaby in the attacking third. Three-year starter Widmayer Jean is back at stopper and Irvin Barreto replaces Moulaye Traore in net. Jacobson is high on blazing newcomer Ibrahim Lakanobo he thinks can make an immediate impact.

“This year we’re gonna come back hard after everything we’ve been through,” Diaby said. “We’re gonna do everything we can to take it all the way.”

While Sangary is gone, everyone else returns from a team that owned the PSAL last fall before the hiccup to Beacon. It’s a deep mix of speed, size and skill – reminiscent to some of Jacobson’s best teams.

“We’re just gonna play great [soccer], show we’re the best team in New York,” Jacobson said, with that typical confidence of his.

His players didn’t make any guarantees, though they did guarantee not one game would be taken lightly, whether it’s Beacon or A.P. Randolph. As far as the defending champion Blue Demons, MLK can’t wait to see them again.

“We want to show it was a mistake,” Diaby said. “A little mistake.”

The only problem for the Knights is they have to wait until Sept. 21.

“I wish it was the first game,” Moya said.

No one cared for John Wooden like Tony Spino

On stage with legends

Tony Spino helps John Wooden as Vin Scully applauds during an event at the Nokia Theatre in 2008. Wooden and Spino were inseparable for years before the former UCLA coach died. (Bernstein & Associates)

When it came time to say goodbye, he could not.

John Wooden was dead. He was Tony Spino's friend and "I wouldn't leave him," says the UCLA athletic trainer who became Wooden's 24-hour caretaker in the coach's final years.

John Wooden's pyramid stands test of time

"To see him slowly die in front of me was hard, yet I had a job to do to take care of him," Spino says. "But it really hit me when he died. I was the only one left in the hospital room and I cried my eyes out.

"I couldn't go away. I waited for the mortuary to come and get him, bag him and tag him. It was so weird, it was like I wanted them to take me and not him.''

It has been more than a year since Wooden's death, and Spino, 61, understands now Coach's undying devotion to his wife, Nellie, who passed 25 years before her husband.

"He never got over the loss; that emptiness was always there,'' Spino says. "I now know that emptiness.''

It gets no easier for Spino. He loses his brother-in-law in March, his own father in June, his father firm and loving like Coach.

"It's like losing two fathers,'' he says, "And most people lose only one.''

Wooden fell 132 days shy of making his 100th birthday, and what a celebration it would've been.

"He wouldn't have liked it,'' says Spino. How many times did the two men argue about dying — Wooden wanting to go but Spino trumping him with, "It's God's will.''

Spino was a trainer for Wooden's freshman basketball team in the early '70s, and took a job as the Milwaukee Bucks' trainer when Wooden retired in 1975.

He returned to UCLA in 1981, and when a doctor asked Spino to look in on Wooden, he didn't stop until the day Coach died.

"First time I walk into his condo there's all this Abraham Lincoln stuff on one side, Mother Teresa on the other and John Wooden sitting in the middle. Holy smokes!''

For the next 25 years Spino goes to the Wooden condo three times a week, 6 to 9 a.m., before continuing to UCLA to work with its athletic teams. As Wooden grows older, it becomes five days, and then six.

"When I drive the 101 and I don't get off at Exit 22, it's like I'm making a mistake," he says, his car already making that turn a while back before he realizes there's no reason to be exiting.

When Wooden finishes his morning exercise routine, Spino drives him to Vip's, Wooden's favorite breakfast hangout. Always the same booth, most often No. 2 on the menu, but on wild and crazy days, No. 1 — which is No. 2 with pancakes.

Spino does not order breakfast because Coach does not allow him to pick up the tab.

"People join him all the time,'' Spino says. "One lady comes in, says hi to me, hi to Coach and sits down. She starts talking to Coach and eating his pancakes.

"When she leaves, Coach wants to know, 'Who's your friend?' I think he's kidding. I thought it was his friend. He says, 'Well, I think she enjoyed her breakfast.' ''

U.S., Canada Set to Face Off for Gold

[canhockey0226] Associated Press

Canada's Sidney Crosby waits for the puck to be dropped in a face-off against Slovakia.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Another young, fast team outdid a veteran-laden opponent to reach the finals of the Olympic men's hockey tournament Friday, as Team Canada defeated Slovakia 3-2 to set up a rematch with Team USA for gold Sunday.

"The guys are already looking forward to it," Canadian goalie Roberto Luongo said.

The game was much closer and more hard-fought than the U.S.-Finland game earlier in the day that was over in the first 10 minutes. But it followed a similar pattern. Canada, like the U.S., jumped out to an early lead, using its forecheck to bottle up the opposition and let its goalie escape barely tested.

The twist was that the Slovakians pushed Canada much harder, scoring two goals in the final period after the Canadians perhaps started listening to their delirious fans, who with 12 minutes left were already chanting "We want USA!"

Canadian players celebrate after winning their semifinal game against Slovakia.

02canhockey0226

02canhockey0226

Like the Finns, the Slovakians were thinner on talent. That forced them to include older players, some of whom couldn't establish themselves in the National Hockey League or have since left it. Players like Jozef Stumpel (37 years old), Zigmund Palffy (37) and Richard Zednik (34) were once consistent scorers in the NHL but have moved back closer to home for the sunset of their careers. Others, like defenseman Martin Strbak, never made it that far, drinking a cup of coffee in hockey's best league years earlier.

But unlike the Finns and other opponents, the Slovakians still had some top-end talent in their prime, such as one of the best defensemen in the NHL, Zdeno Chara, one of the league's top scorers, Marian Gaborik, and one of the best all-around forwards, Marian Hossa.

They consistently made life difficult for the Canadians, forechecking relentlessly, with Hossa especially effective in pinning the Canadians deep in their end – perhaps a lesson to the U.S. team, which has employed a similar strategy on other teams. Mr. Gaborik was also tricky, occasionally tearing up the left wing and zinging shots on Mr. Luongo.

Chasing the True Team Canada

Canada's strategy for scoring was simple: put pucks on net and screen the Slovakian goalie, Jaroslav Halak, an up-and-coming netminder in the NHL. At 6-foot, Halak isn't an ideal size for netminders in today's hockey. Canada smartly placed forwards in front of him to create screens.

When Mr. Chara was on the ice this didn't work. He easily cleared away the Canadian forwards. But when some of the lesser Slovakian defenders were on the ice they couldn't contain the bulkiest Canadian forwads.

Vote: Best Olympic Reaction

View Interactive

That led to goals early on by Patrick Marleau and Brenden Morrow, with Slovakian defender Lubomir Visnovsky victimized on both. Mr. Visnovsky, a power-play specialist with the Edmonton Oilers, was paired with Mr. Strbak, a big defender but not a great one. They were by far Slovakia's weakest defensive pairing early on.

Canada extended its lead in the third on a goal by Ryan Getzlaf in a goal-mouth scramble. But the Slovakians didn't give up. With Mr. Halak holding down the fort, it was up to two of its lesser lights to bring them within a goal.

First came Mr. Visnovsky, who made use of his rushing skills to charge up the ice and squeeze a backhand shot through a tiny space that Mr. Luongo had left – a goal that the netminder probably would have liked back. Then came a second by Michal Handzus, a big forward with the Los Angeles Kings, who batted in a goal after intense Slovakian pressure with 4:53 left.

But even after Slovakia pulled its goalie, it didn't quite have the firepower to score the equalizer and Canada held on, setting up a rematch with Team USA. Pavol Demitra had a chance to tie in the final seconds but missed an open net.

U.S. forward Patrick Kane said after his team's game that he was almost sorry that the game against Finland ended so quickly because it deprived his team of a chance to further test itself. "That was a great 15 minutes for us but it would have been nice to play a full 60," Mr. Kane said.

That's probably not a regret the Canadians had. The team looked chastened as the game ended and the fans began to chant "We want USA!" some more.

The orange edition is depicted. This model marks the fifteenth distinct Hot Wheels Camaro casting. The first casting was the Custom Camaro/'67 Camaro, which was one of the original 16 Hot Wheels models. Note that out of the 240 standard models in the 2010 Hot Wheels collection, five of them are models of Camaros (a new edition of the original 1967 Camaro, two 2010 Camaros and two fifth-generation Camaro concepts).
