Amazon to create 900 jobs in Edinburgh

Amazon to create 900 jobs in Edinburgh

Amazon, the online retailer, will create 900 jobs in Edinburgh when it opens a new customer service centre this summer, the second time this year it has announced it is taking on more staff in Scotland.

Amazon's customer service centre will open in August, a few months before a 1m square-foot order distribution site opens in Dunfermline, Fife.

There will be 500 permanent and 400 temporary jobs at the site in Edinburgh. In January, Amazon said it would take on 750 people for the distribution centre in Dunfermline and another 200 staff at an exisiting site in Gourock, on the Firth of Clyde.

"This news provides a significant boost to the local economy, creates 900 jobs in the heart of Edinburgh, and demonstrates the company's commitment to working in Scotland," said Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland.

More jobs were created in Scotland last year through foreign direct investment than in any other part of the UK, according to Ernst & Young. More than 4,000 jobs resulted from 69 projects, it said in a report published today, while London secured 3,229 jobs from 289 projects.

The customer service hub will also provide technical support for Amazon's Kindle e-readers and MP3 players.

London 2012 Olympics: Charles van Commenee steps up demands on British athletes in countdown to Games

London 2012 Olympics: Charles van Commenee steps up demands on british athletes in countdown to Games

The UK Athletics head coach, Charles van Commenee, has called for an across-the-board improvement this summer as Britain’s athletes embark on a season that could have a major bearing on the size of the country’s medal haul in London next year.

The Dutchman, who was hired in 2009 with the sole mission of maximising the number of track and field medallists in 2012, says he wants more athletes “to almost touch the rostrum” at the World Championships in South Korea, in August.

“As a team, it’s a year when you must try to get more athletes in the medal zone,” he said. “What I’m looking for is more athletes who could come close to medals — whether they finish fourth or fifth or whatever. I want them to almost touch the rostrum at world level.

“Last year we had a handful of those, like Michael Rimmer, Perri Shakes-Drayton and Dai Greene. If we can get three or four more like that, then come next year they could do it at the Olympics. That’s what I’m looking for.”

The opening shots in the campaign will be fired this week as British athletes face key early-season tests in Italy, Holland and Austria before Paula Radcliffe returns in a 10km road race in London on May 30.

“Obviously, Paula can be the star of the Games, so Paula is a very important athlete for British athletics,” said Van Commenee. “She’s also fragile, and it’s all about getting her fit to the start line in London. ”

Phillips Idowu, the world and European triple jump champion, heads a strong British contingent at the Rome Diamond League meeting on Thursday, while Jenny Meadows and Andy Turner are among 15 GB athletes entered for next Sunday’s FBK Games in Hengelo, Holland.

But most intriguing of all will be the form of world and European heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis, who will be attempting to extend her unbeaten multi-events record at the top-class Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis, Austria.

The Sheffield athlete missed eight weeks’ training this winter due to an inflamed ankle, but she showed few ill effects at yesterday’s curtain-raising Loughborough International.

Her lack of high jump training had been a real worry but Ennis was happy with her clearance of 1.86 metres in conditions so windy that officials had to hold the bar in place.

“That was horrendous to jump in,” she said. “It was just blowing you about and you had to fight against the wind. But, all in all, my run-up and my jumping felt really good.”

The gusty conditions were more advantageous to Ennis in the javelin as a tailwind helped produce a throw of 44.47m.

Kelly Sotherton, who has switched from multi-events to the quarter-mile in the hoping of securing a place in the women’s 4x400m relay team in Korea, caused a moment of panic when she slumped to the ground midway through her 400m race.

However, the problem was no more serious than a severe attack of heartburn, and she returned to finish seventh in the 200m, in 23.81sec.

Meanwhile, Dwain Chambers showed impressive early form in his 100m race at the Caixa Sao Paulo meeting in Brazil, winning in a legal time of 10.01sec that puts him sixth in the world rankings.

Biutiful, DVD review

Biutiful, DVD review

Javier Bardem gives a portrayal easily worth his Oscar-nomination but he cannot carry the fate of the film.

Dir: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu; starring: Javier Bardem. 141 mins, Optimum Releasing. Rating: * *

In the main extra on the Biutiful DVD, we get to see a handful of shots of director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu convening with his actors moments before a scene. These fleeting glimpses prove inspiring stuff. Inarritu explains the forthcoming scene to his actors with a conviction and earnestness that’s reminiscent of footage of Francis Ford Coppola explaining Michael’s motivation to Al Pacino on the set of The Godfather.

Clearly, Inaritu is an actor’s director (Biutiful’s actors confirm as much in the other DVD extras). His films regularly elicit difficult, emotionally-driven performances: Gael Garcia Bernal and Goya Toledo in Amores Perros; Naomi Watts in 21 Grams; even Brad Pitt in Babel. And Biutiful is no different.

Javier Bardem is the lead actor this time round. His character, Uxbal, almost literally carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. The father of two small children and the estranged husband of a bipolar wife, he makes money by convening with the dead, carries out underworld negotiations with the police on behalf of two immigrant communities, and has terminal prostate cancer to boot.

Uxbal is perhaps the most narratively put-upon character in the history of cinema, but Bardem’s shoulders are suitably broad. He pads around like a wounded bear, lugubrious yet vital, all the time dimly aware of his tragic flaw: a heart made of gold. It’s a wonderfully humanistic portrayal, easily worth the Oscar nomination it received, and it confirms Bardem’s status as probably the most under-appreciated male lead of our time.

Unfortunately, while Bardem may be able to carry the weight of the world, he cannot carry the fate of the film.

Inarritu’s sense of how to sculpt drama remains distinctly dodgy. He piles on one moribund event after another for emotional effect in Biutiful, leaving little space for nuance or genuine reflection. Add to this his tendency towards MTV-style glibness (there’s a fist-bitingly out of place nightclub scene during Uxbal’s final days) and you’re left with a two-hour dirge of viewer manipulation.

Without Bardem, this would be a truly deathly film to watch.

Rapture: the end was not nigh, after all

Rapture: the end was not nigh, after all

The apocalypse did not arrive at 6pm on May 21st, despite the predictions by Christian doomsday prophet Harold Camping.

Participants in a movement that is proselytizing that the world will end this May 21, Judgment Day, walk through the streets on May 13, 2011 in New York

By Laura Donnelly, Bonnie Malkin and David Barrett 7:01PM BST 21 May 2011

Given that the end of the world was supposed to be nigh, it perhaps wasn’t surprising that Christian doomsday prophet Harold Camping had shown some reluctance to take advance bookings.

The 89-year-old Californian preacher and radio host had prophesied that the Rapture would begin at 6pm May 21st in each of the world’s time zones, with non-believers wiped out by rolling earthquakers, as the saved ascended into heaven.

His refusal to schedule a media interview for the following day - “It is absolutely going to happen. There is no way that I can schedule an interview because I won’t be here.” - was being replayed by media as the world firmly stayed standing.

On the microsite Twitter, groups of atheists and sceptics were last night swapping tales of After Rapture parties, with one group, in Tacoma, Washington, branding their celebration “Countdown to Back-Pedalling”.

Mr Camping’s doomsday prediction wasn’t his first. He blamed an earlier apocalyptic prediction which passed quietly in 1994 on a mathematical error, last month saying: “I’m not embarrassed about it. It was just the fact that it was premature.”

This time would be different, with “no possibility” it would not happen. While across the United States, some devotees reportedly sold all their possessions and took to the streets to warn of the second coming of Jesus, in Britain, sceptical voices were louder.

After 6pm passed without incident in New Zealand and Australia, Stephen Fry tweeted: “Marvellous news! Rapture doesnt mean end of world; apparently all the planet’s imbeciles disappear in one go.”

Amid the sound of ruffled feathers he later added: “Calm down. Never said all Christians are imbeciles. Just those who think they’ll be raised up today. They do the faith a grave disservice.”

Earlier TV scientist Professor Brian Cox had suggested it was a good time for a global practical joke: “I think we should all pretend the rapture is happening so that when Harold Camping gets left behind later today he’ll be livid.”

Some of the first reports that the apocalypse was not keeping to schedule emerged from New Zealand. Kiwis confirmed there were no signs of the dead rising from the grave, nor of the living ascending into the clouds to meet Jesus Christ.

Daniel Boerman tweeted: “I’m from New Zealand, it is 6.06pm, the world has NOT ended. No earthquakes here, all waiting for the Rapture can relax for now.”

On the island of Tonga, which reached 6pm an hour earlier, there was a reported absence of zombies, true believers hurtling skywards, arch-angels and trumpeters.

Two minor earthquakes did hit the Pacific earlier in the day, measuring 3.1 and 4.8 and not triggering any tsunami warnings, but earthquakes of that magnitude are a regular occurrence in the region.

Mr Camping, a retired engineer, spread his message of doom via Family Radio, which has a network of 66 radio stations and online broadcasts.

However websites in the United States reported that not all of those working for the station were so sure, with a receptionist telling journalists that she expected to turn up for work on Monday.

After the day of reckoning, Mr Camping said non-believers would suffer through hell on earth until October 21, when God would pull the plug on the planet once and for all.

The Rapture - the belief that Christ will bring the faithful into paradise prior to a period of tribulation on Earth that precedes the end of time - is a relatively new notion, rejected by most Christians.

However, the prophecy has led to unrest in Vietnam, where thousands of members of the Hmong ethnic minority gathered near the border with Laos earlier this month to await the world’s end. The government arrested a number of “extremists” and dispersed a crowd of about 5,000.

Mr Camping came up with his prediction using a calculation that started with the year of the Great Flood, 4990 BC, added 7,000 years because, in the Bible, God “reminds us that one day is as 1,000 years,” and then subtracted one because of a glitch when passing from the old to the new testament calendars.

As May 21 drew nearer, donations grew, allowing Family Radio to spend millions of dollars on more than 5,000 billboards plastered with the doomsday message. In 2009, the non for profit reported that it received $18.3 million in donations, and had assets of more than $104 million.

Yesterday, in California, some believers had shut themselves inside to pray as they wait for the world’s end.

Others were meeting with their children for tearful last lunches, and preparing to leave behind pets and be swept up to heaven.

Some wanted to make sure their pets receive good treatment, no matter what happens.

Sharon Moss, who founded AfterTheRapturePetCare.com to provide post-apocalypse animal care, said a new wave of customers has paid $10 to sign up in the last few weeks.

“A lot of people have said you should be out there saving souls not saving pets but my heart says 'why can’t you do both?”’ said Moss.

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg - who is Jewish and, according to Mr Camping’s prophecy, therefore unlikely to be beamed up to sit alongside Jesus in heaven - said on his weekly radio show on Friday that he would partially suspend parking restrictions in New York if the world ended.

Seeing the potential to profit from the prediction, one website was selling T-shirts marked: “I survived May 21, 2011. You really thought the world would end? Dumb ass.”

However, it was hedging its bets on delivery times. “If the world doesn’t end, you’ll get your shirt in approximately 10 business days,” it says.

Edwin van der Sar is going out at the very top, says Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson is to ask Edwin van der Sar to captain Manchester United in his final Premier League game for the club against Blackpool tomorrow, but insists he will make a final attempt to persuade Paul Scholes not to follow the Dutch goalkeeper into retirement.

Ferguson, who will hand Darren Fletcher his first senior start since March 1 in an attempt to get the Scotland midfielder fully fit for next Saturday’s Champions League final against Barcelona, admits he will rest several key players against Blackpool, despite the threat of Premier League sanction for fielding a weakened team in a game which carries huge significance in the relegation battle.

Wayne Rooney, rio ferdinand, Barclays player of the year Nemanja Vidic and Javier Hernandez are all set to miss out against Ian Holloway’s team.

But with Ferguson’s selection under scrutiny because Blackpool are one of five clubs facing relegation, the United manager admits he will name a team much stronger than the collection of reserves and youngsters who faced Hull on the final day of the 2008-09 campaign. And Van der Sar, who has confirmed his plans to retire, will lead the champions out at Old Trafford.

“He’s been fantastic, absolutely sensational, with his professionalism and dedication,” said Ferguson, who has been named manager of the year. “For a goalkeeper, training is completely different to outfield players. It involves diving about their goalmouth all the time, saving shots, blocks. To do that when you’re over 40 years of age – it’s hard to imagine a normal person would do that.

“He’s special and he’s got something special inside himself. Some people have a certain quality inside them that involves a need to be a winner all the time. That’s what Edwin has been, a winner, all his life. He’s had a fantastic career and he’s going out at the very top.”

In contrast to Van der Sar, Scholes has left United guessing as to his future, but the 36 year-old is understood to be ready to retire following the Champions League final.

Ferguson remains hopeful, however, that he can persuade the former England midfielder to stay on for one more year.

“We will discuss it and, hopefully, encourage him to stay on another year,” Ferguson said. “We will talk at the end of the season.”

Despite the Champions League final on the horizon, Ferguson admits Blackpool’s involvement in the relegation battle is an issue he cannot ignore. But with Fletcher, only recently returned from a virus, needing games to prove his fitness for Wembley, Ferguson is confident that his eventual selection will save United from criticism.

“There are players who need a game anyway.” Ferguson said. “Fletcher, Scholes, Anderson, Dimitar Berbatov, Patrice Evra and Van der Sar will all play. There are certain players who need a game. How we manage the rest, we will have to wait and see.

“Darren is much better, getting stronger. He’s doing all his work. After his reserve game, he trained the whole day and completed the session the next day because he is very keen to get there and we will give him every chance. He is a big-game player for us, so we are chasing him along to give him the chance of being ready for the final.”

Ferguson added: “This game is not a game you enjoy, playing someone at the bottom of the league. It’s not the easiest game for me to pick a team. The most important thing on Sunday is to make sure there is no criticism of the club.”

Blackpool must better Birmingham’s result at Tottenham and hope Wigan fail to win at Stoke to stay up.

David Beckham will play in Gary Neville’s testimonial match against Juventus on Tuesday, eight years after he left Old Trafford for Real Madrid. Ryan Giggs and Scholes will also be involved despite their presence in the United squad for the Champions League final.

Stavanger Rogaland Norway 17th April 2011

As we returned from the Lysefjord cruise Subsea 7's Seven Oceans was seen tied up in Stavanger harbour.

The Seven Oceans is a pipelay vessel with an advanced reeled pipelay system capable of rigid and flexible pipelay, in water depths up to 3000m. Build by Merwede in Rotterdam in 2007 it is, surprisingly (to me at least), registered in Douglas, Isle of Man.

London 2012 Olympics: West Ham 'committed' to Olympic Stadium, despite Premier League relegation

London 2012 Olympics: West Ham 'committed' to Olympic Stadium, despite Premier League relegation

West Ham have said that relegation from the Premier League will not scupper their plans to move into the Olympic Stadium.

Going ahead: West Ham will not let relegation affect Olympic Stadium move Photo: PA

Whatever the impact of demotion on the club's already fragile finances, it will not changes plans to make the £486 million stadium their new home after the London 2012 Games, according to the club.

A spokesman said: "We remain totally committed to it. Our target is to move there in three football seasons time and we would hope that we would return to the Premier League as soon as possible.

"Our bid (to move into the stadium) was based on several different areas. It was modelled on Premier League, Championship and different scenarios - that has been the case from day one.

"As far as our plans for the Olympic Stadium are concerned, we are continuing at a pace.

"All things are connected but the club will obviously set about rebuilding so that we are in a position to challenge at the highest level in the Championship and get back into the Premier League as soon as possible.

"No doubt we will be doing things in the coming weeks in order to prepare the club to hopefully get back. We just have to get on with it."

Avram Grant was sacked as manager just over an hour after the 3-2 defeat at fellow strugglers Wigan, West Ham's 18th league loss, sealed their relegation.

The Hammers, in a joint bid with Newham Council, intend to convert the 80,000-seater stadium into a 60,000-seater stadium, keeping an athletics track.

The club plans to move from Upton Park in 2014-15 with a 250-year lease and to give a 250-year lease to UK Athletics (UKA).

They have begun a competitive tender, which could take at least three months to complete, to find contractors to convert the stadium.

They are also still discussing a deal with the Olympic Park Legacy Company in order to move to the stadium.

They are pressing ahead with talks in the face of possible judicial reviews by Tottenham and Leyton Orient over the way in which they became preferred bidder to move into the venue.

Last month Spurs, who were beaten by West Ham to become the preferred bidder, applied for a judicial review of Newham Council's role in arranging a £40m loan to finance West Ham's move.

The club has widened the appeal and asked the High Court to start a separate judicial review into the roles of several other parties involved in awarding West Ham the stadium.

In March, Spurs wrote letters to all parties involved in the process, demanding answers about how the decision was reached.

The club applied for a judicial review in relation to Newham Council after receiving what it said were unacceptable answers.

Leyton Orient have also demanded a judicial review of Newham's role in partnering West Ham's bid.

Youssouf Mulumbu boosted West Bromwich Albion's hopes of finishing as the midlands' highest-placed club in the Barclays Premier League with a first half winner against 10-man Everton at the Hawthorns.

The midfielder scored his seventh goal of the campaign after just 10 minutes as the Baggies finished their home programme on a successful note.

Everton had substitute Diniyar Bilyaletdinov sent off late on after just five minutes on the pitch for a challenge on James Morrison.

Roy Hodgson's side are now four points clear of local rivals Aston Villa, who visit Arsenal tomorrow, thanks to a dramatic turnaround in fortunes under the former Liverpool manager.

They have collected 19 points from 11 games since he replaced Roberto Di Matteo in early February and been beaten only twice.

The game was an open affair with both sides free from the threat of relegation and opposing strikers Peter Odemwingie and Victor Anichebe were a constant threat.

It was surprising only one goal was scored given the chances created by both sides.

Albion midfielder Paul Scharner was a distinctive figure with his new dyed blue and white haircut in Albion colours, while Baggies leading scorer Odemwingie received his Barclays player of the month award before kick-off.

The first threat came from Odemwingie after he raced onto a long pass from Mulumbu but he drilled his shot into the side netting.

But after 10 minutes Mulumbu broke the deadlock.

Chris Brunt chipped the ball forward and Odemwingie held off the challenge of Sylvain Distin before squaring the ball across the area to Mulumbu who had a simple tap-in.

Everton had the chance to equalise four minutes later when Anichebe spun past Jonas Olsson inside the box but Scott Carson made a fine save to deflect his shot past the post.

Everton keeper Tim Howard then tipped a Brunt free-kick over the bar after Leighton Baines had brought down Odemwingie.

There were plenty of chances at both ends and John Heitinga headed wide from close range when unmarked from a Seamus Coleman cross.

Jerome Thomas then skipped past Tim Howard inside the Everton box but saw his shot cleared off the line by Tony Hibbert.

Howard made a fine save to keep out Odemwingie's header at point blank range after Olsson had flicked on a long throw from Mulumbu.

Carson made another fine save to turn aside Anichebe's downward header low to his left from a Hibbert cross

Everton skipper Phil Neville became the first player to be yellow carded in the 49th minute for a challenge on Mulumbu.

Everton were on top early in the second period and a deep corner from Arteta found Leon Osman completely unmarked but he sliced his shot wide.

In an Albion counter-attack Cox just failed to connect at full stretch with a low centre from Odemwingie.

Neville appealed in vain for a penalty for handball after his volley struck Scharner. Then Tamas made a great block to keep out a fierce drive from Arteta.

Thomas was booked for bringing down Hibbert before Jermaine Beckford replaced Coleman after 62 minutes.

Scharner could have doubled Albion's lead but headed wide from Odemwingie's ball into the danger area.

Phil Jagielka climbed above the Baggies defence to head an Arteta corner over the bar.

Albion were sitting too deep and Bilyaletdinov shot over from 10 yards out after racing onto Hibbert's cross.

Bilyaletdinov was sent off after 77 minutes for a high challenge on Morrison.

Howard denied Odemwingie who went for goal with Brunt unmarked in the centre before Tamas was booked in the final minute for time wasting.

Coalition first anniversary: political year in quotes

Coalition first anniversary: political year in quotes

On the first anniversary of the Coalition government, Telegraph.co.uk picks out some of the most memorable political quotes of the last year.

Prime Minister David Cameron (R) and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg share a joke as they hold their first joint press conference in the Downing Street garden

12:23PM BST 11 May 2011

“Nick Clegg.”
At the inaugural Coalition press conference in the Downing Street rose garden, a journalist reminded David Cameron that he once named the Lib Dem leader when asked his favourite political joke.

“I’m afraid I did once ... We’re all going to have things that we said thrown back at us ... If we all have to swallow some humble pie and if it means eating some of your words I can’t think of a more excellent diet with which to provide the country with good government.”
David Cameron backtracked over his Nick Clegg gag, at the same press conference.

"You can call it fairness. You can call it responsibility. You can call it liberalism."
Nick Clegg defined the Coalition's philosophy at the press conference.

“Arranged marriages often work better than ones born out of love.”
Vince Cable, Business Secretary.

“It was like a scuba diver in the shark tank really. We have got to be realistic about this, obviously it had its moments, I think we could say.”
Andrew Stunell, Lib Dem coalition negotiator.

“I was actually thinking of coming in today and applying for the course on communication skills, then I thought I might do public relations, then maybe media management, drama and performance.”
Gordon Brown, the former Prime Minister on a visit to Adam Smith College in Kirkcaldy, on the first day of the Coalition.

“A Brokeback Coalition”
David Davis, the former shadow home secretary, joked about the Lib-Con union in comments to businessmen, according to a report by the Financial Times. He later said it had been coined by the former Conservative Party chairman Lord Ashcroft.

''I hope that over time, if people are going to associate it (the coalition) with a Western, I hope they will go for True Grit because that's what we are going to need.''
David Cameron responds to the 'Brokeback Coalition' jibe,

“It really does look and feel different. Indeed many of us are sitting next to people that we've never sat next to before.”
David Cameron on the new Commons.

"We are hoping that we will be using a scalpel rather than a chainsaw."
David Laws, after announcing cuts worth more than £6.2bn.

"From now on governments will have to fix the budget to fit the figures, instead of fixing the figures to fit the budget."
George Osborne, the Chancellor, after the creation of the Office for Budget Responsibility.

"When they are under pressure, they are ruthless, calculating and really rather tribal. But that's the way they always have been."

Thousands to protest against sexual assault in 'SlutWalks'

Thousands to protest against sexual assault in 'SlutWalks'

Thousands of women will take to the streets next month in the first anti-sexist "SlutWalks" in Britain.

Women march through downtown Boston during the sex crimes"/>

Women march through downtown Boston during the 'SlutWalk' in Boston, which organizers described as a demonstration against those who blame the victims of sex crimes

By Laura Roberts 8:05AM BST 10 May 2011

The protest marches take their name from the words of a Canadian police officer who said that women should “avoid dressing as sluts” to make it less likely to be harassed.

The comments sparked a worldwide movement - largely galvanised by Facebook and Twitter - and the first British “SlutWalks” have now been announced for June 4.

Trafalgar Square in London will provide a focus point for thousands of women and there are events planned in Cardiff, Edinburgh and possibly Brighton and Birmingham.

The movement was created after a police officer in Toronto visited Osgoode Hall High School three months ago to advise students on staying safe.

He told the 10 students present: “I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this - however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.”

The comments were posted online sparking international outrage.

Since then protest events have taken place in more than 20 US states as well as Argentine, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and the UK.

SlutWalk organisers say they are protesting against the culture of blame which surrounds the victims of rape and sexual assault which leads to fewer women reporting crimes and low conviction rates.

The Edinburgh SlutWalk will leave from the National Gallery on June 4 while the Cardiff Event will leave from Cardiff University Students’ Union, pending police approval.

According to Facebook groups almost 4,000 people plan to attend the march in London.

Anastasia Richardson, 17, who organised the London event said: “This is an issue that has resonated around the world with people who reject the idea of blaming a victim of sexual assault rather than the criminal.”

Why STD medications should not be too easy to buy

If you have an STD outbreak or suspect you may be infected, an over-the-counter treatment might just seem like the ideal combination of discretion, relief, and budget consciousness. But the FDA warns that STD products sold over the counter or online are not only a waste of time and money, they could be dangerous.

According to the FDA, there are at least 15 such products on the market, some of which are marketed as dietary supplements, that make unproven claims to prevent, treat, or even cure sexual transmitted diseases, including chlamydia, herpes, HIV, AIDS, and genital herpes.

Debbie Birnkrant, MD, a FDA medical expert says the products could lead to a public health threat.

“If you aren’t treating your STD with an FDA-approved medication, you’re not just putting your own health at risk—you could be endangering your partner,” Birnkrant noted.

The FDA and FTC are threatening legal action to manufacturers if the products are not removed from the market, and are focusing on the brands Medavir, Herpaflor, and Viruxo. In the meantime, Birnkrant says consumers should be well-informed about how to get a proper treatment. The only way to reliably test and diagnose an STD is by a health care professional, she says.

The only FDA-approved medications to treat STDs are available with a prescription. And the only non-prescription prevention method is using a condom, which reduces the chance of spreading infection from partner to partner.

Curious which STD products the FDA is warning consumers to skip? Check out this Flickr stream with photos of the bogus treatments.

Should reliable, safe STD remedies be available over-the-counter? Or is it better that they stay prescription-only?

Manchester United

Edwin van der Sar 6/10
Had little chance, given the ferocity with which Jurado struck the ball, with Schalke's goal, but otherwise the Dutchman was as calm and assured as ever.

Rafael 6
Well marshalled for much of the evening by Julian Draxler, but the Brazilian offers a consistent outlet going forward and is growing in defensive stature.

Chris Smalling 5
It was his mistake that led to Jurado's goal, a lapse in concentration which can be attributed to his comparative lack of experience at this level.

Jonny Evans 6
Could do little to prevent his inadvertent role in Jurado's goal and was otherwise largely untroubled by the German side's attack.

John O'Shea 6
Captain for the evening, but rarely can the position have seemed more ceremonial. Did nothing wrong, but hardly a noticeable presence after leading his side out for kick-off.

Paul Scholes 6
Employed in the deep-lying playmaker role best typified by AC Milan's Andrea Pirlo, Scholes was tasked with dictating tempo but failed to impose himself on the game.

Antonio Valencia 8
The more persistent threat from United's flanks, the Ecuadorean settled the hosts' few nerves with his early strike, just his second of an injury-ravaged season.

Anderson 7
Fulfilled his obligation to burst forward with typical energy and verve, and saw his persistence rewarded with the goal which ended Schalke's hopes.

Darron Gibson 8
Better on the pitch than he is on Twitter. The Irishman may be a bite noir for United's fans, but while his goal was fortuitous, his distribution was impressive here.

Nani 7
Always looks dangerous but how often the Portuguese's self-indulgence means he flatters to deceive is evidenced by his presence in United's semi-final stiffs.

Dimitar Berbatov 6
Started brightly enough, laconically troubling Schalke in the inside left channel, but faded. Not a performance to demand a place at Wembley.

Substitutes: Patrice Evra replaced Rafael after 60 minutes to shore up the defence before Darren Fletcher made is return in place of Scholes after 73.

-----------------------------------------------------

Schalke

Manuel Neuer 5/10
If last week's praise was a little inflated, he should not be overly pilloried for misjudging the flight of Gibson's shot. Still produced one brilliant save from Anderson.

Atsuto Uchida 4
At fault for United's opener, gifting the ball to the hosts inside his own half, and a weak point throughout the tie. Poor positionally and on the turn.

Benedikt Howedes 6
The brightest defensive prospect in Germany lent a degree more credibility to Schalke's back line, though they still failed to look imposing.

Christoph Metzelder 6
Again, solid enough, but there are times when his positional sense fails to disguise a lack of pace which a quicker forward than Berbatov would have exploited mercilessly.

Sergio Escudero 6
Far better going forward than travelling back, the Spaniard endured a difficult evening at the hands of the lively Valencia.

Jose Manuel Jurado 7
Neuer aside, the only Schalke player to emerge with credit from the two ties. His goal was fearsomely struck and his general play neatly constructive.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos 5
Feted as Schalke's emerging firefighter, the Greek teenager has been something of a wet blanket. Failed to cope with Anderson's and Gibson's raids.

Jefferson Farfan 6
His power and pace make the Peruvian a threat, but his performances at home and away have lacked the end product he managed against Inter and Valencia.

Alexander Baumjohann 5
Rescued from the club's reserves by Ralf Rangnick, the 24-year-old looked out of his depth here. Replaced by the muscular, but ineffective, Edu at half-time.

Julian Draxler 6
Schalke's great youthful hope, the teenager did not get in the game sufficiently to showcase his abilities. He will be confident of returning to similar stages.

Raul 5
Asked to perform a role which he would have been ill-suited to even in his prime, the tournament's leading scorer will not have wished to bow out with such a whimper.

Substitutes: Edu replaced Baumjohann at half time but lacks sufficient quality at this level, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar came on for Howedes after 70 minutes. Joel Matip replaced Farfan on 75.
